Is it possible to replace tennis with pickleball? If one trusts what is said in Moda Operandi, the answer is yes. Because of this, the new Club Moda summer capsule collection features pickleball and a pickleball paddle. The group can be found in an online shop. However, they are not the only ones embracing the fashion element of the sport. In recent months, Norma Kamali started selling her pickleball dress, and other fashion brands like Nike and Alice + Olivia have also experimented with producing pickleball clothing. Pickleball is projected to be the most rapidly expanding sport in the country, according to research conducted in 2022 by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association.
But how does one’s clothing compare to those of other sports? The game of pickleball itself may come across as childish, but how it’s played is much sillier. After all, it is a low-threat and low-impact pastime that, until recently, was enjoyed mainly by older people. Theoretically, one could play pickleball while wearing the same gear that one might wear for tennis; however, being a little more concerned about one’s appearance makes the game much more fun. Think of a sportier version of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy or the Yuppie look combined with the preppy aesthetic of the 1990s New England. Alternately, a lot of colors, as elite pickleball players such as Anna Leigh Waters often choose bright pinks and electric greens in their attire.
For example, to produce the 70 unique pieces for Moda Operandi’s Club Moda summer collection, the shop teamed up with a total of 24 different designers, both established and upcoming, including Brandon Maxwell, Jil Sander, Rosie Assoulin, House of Aama, and The Frankie Shop. The pickleball above set, built for the collection in collaboration with the pickleball equipment manufacturer Recess, was also featured in the group. Maxwell, who designed the striped products in question, cites Nantucket as one of his favorite places to visit during the summer. “For our capsule collection with Moda, we transformed some of our core pieces to embody the spirit of the nautical landscape.” We had a lot of fun playing around with the traditional nautical stripe while pulling ideas from the vibrant colors and patterns of sailboats and beach cabanas.
Natalia Montero and Camilla Deterre are two models featured in the campaign for the collection for Moda Operandi, which Blair Getz Mezibov photographed at The I’On Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. In one of the photographs, the model can be seen striking a pose against a net while dressed in all-black attire, a headband made of elastic that matches the rest of her ensemble, dark sunglasses, an enormous silver watch, and long white socks. It is just the kind of laid-back outfit with a touch of vintage-code influence that is so fashionable.
Lauren Santo Domingo, who helped develop Moda Operandi and now serves as its chief brand officer, also has plans to start playing the sport throughout the summer. “Thoreau is attributed as stating, ‘Beware of any endeavors that necessitate new clothing.’ I believe that they are the best.
